Abstract

IMBERTI, Santiago; AMOROS, Carlos D.  and  CADIERNO, Sonia A.. Presence and breeding of the Ruddy-headed Goose Chloephaga rubidiceps in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Hornero [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.1, pp.17-22. ISSN 0073-3407.

The mainland-Fuegian population of the Ruddy-headed Goose (Chloephaga rubidiceps) is in danger of extinction, as demonstrated by several works that evaluated its situation in Tierra del Fuego, the XII Región (Chile), and the wintering sites in Buenos Aires Province. This work presents novel information on distribution, abundance and breeding of the Ruddy-headed Goose in southern Santa Cruz Province, an area not surveyed in those studies. This area probably holds at least 70-100 individuals, increasing the estimated population size by 10%. Furthermore, it also constitutes the only area where the species regularly breeds in Argentina. We provide data obtained in the last eleven years, along with comments on breeding biology, habitat and conservation issues.

Keywords : breeding; Chloephaga rubidiceps; Ruddy-headed Goose; Santa Cruz.
