Abstract

FELIU, María Susana; PINEIRO, Adriana; LOPEZ, Clara  and  SLOBODIANIK, Nora Haydée. Pediatric reference values of zinc, copper, selenium. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2005, vol.39, n.4, pp.459-462. ISSN 0325-2957.

The aim of this work is to determine pediatric sera reference values of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) . Serum samples of forty-two healthy children assisted for their control at the Paediatric Unit of José de San Martín Hospital (Buenos Aires City) between 1 month and 12 years of age, were evaluated. Samples of whole blood sera without hemolysis were collected from fasting patients and the minerals were determined by Flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results expressed as ranges are: Cu: 0.78-2.51 mg /mL; Zn: 0.82- 2.80 mg /mL and Se: 32.2-100.6 mg /L. There are differences with adult values; this fact shows the importance of defining mineral values for specific age ranges.

Keywords : copper; zinc; selenium; reference values; children.
