Abstract

ZUIANI, María Fernanda  and  BAVA, Amadeo Javier. Erithrasma: a case report. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2008, vol.42, n.1, pp.35-38. ISSN 0325-2957.

The finding of filamentous bacteria morphologically compatible with Corynebacterium minutissimun in skin scales obtained by scraping an inguinal lesion, submitted for micologic study was reported. The scales were cleared with KOH and the microscopy revealed grampositive and acid fast filamentous bacteria when Gram and Kinyoun techniques were applied, respectively. Culture of the scales in 5% blood agar produced creamy colonies with a microscopic morphology characteristically observed in Corynebacterium: genera typical pleomorphic grampositive rods, some of them grouped in "palisade" and as "Chinese letters". Identification of the isolated strain at the species level was not performed due to its being troublesome and not indispensable for the diagnosis of the disease. Erithrasma is a skin bacterial infection that can clinically be mistaken for dermatophytosis and should be differentiated from it by the corresponding microbiologic study.

Keywords : Erithrasma; Corynebacterium minutissimun.
