Abstract

CASTANO, John H.  and  CORRALES, Juan D.. First record of Centronycteris centralis (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae) for the Colombian Andes. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2007, vol.14, n.1, pp.69-72. ISSN 0327-9383.

We documented the finding of two specimens of C. centralis in a tropical rainforest in the Colombian Andes. The characteristics of the voucher (MHNUC 0441) are similar to those of C. centralis, except in the shape of the coronoid process of the mandible. These bats were perching about 2 m above ground, from the underside of a large leaf with little holes used to hang their foot. It is possible that Centronycteris modify the substratum to fit its roost. Inspection of the intestinal contents suggests flexibility in their foraging behavior, gleaning insects from leaves and branches but also by capturing them while flying.

Keywords : Colombia; Diurnal roost; Insectivory.
