Abstract

MALDOVAN BONELLI, Johanna; GOREN, Nora  and  CORRADI, Florencia. New problems or deepening of existing inequalities?. Trab. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.36, pp.55-79.  Epub Jan 01, 2021. ISSN 1514-6871.

The COVID-19 pandemic had serious consequences at the global level in the different dimensions of human life. Among them, the possibilities and ways of working of millions of people were drastically modified. The impacts on the economy and the labor market have been heterogeneous both internationally and locally, depending on the characteristics of the different activities and occupations, marked by different levels of informality and social and labor lack of protection. In this context, this article analyzes the impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic have had on the artisanal brick production and on the working and living conditions of brickmakers and how these impacts are related to the previous structural problems of this sector. The analysis presented recovers, on the one hand, in-depth interviews, observations and field notes made over the last seven years. On the other, data produced in the month of May through the application of a questionnaire in 68 brick factories and 53 cases of “brick neighborhoods” that belong to the popular economy sector in 15 provinces of Argentina.

Keywords : COVID-19; Work; Popular Economy; Inequalities; Brickers.
