Abstract

WYNVELDT, Federico  and  IUCCI, María Emilia. Reconstructing the Late Landscape of Hualfín Valley: a Contribution from Loma de la Escuela Vieja (Puerta de Corral Quemado, Belén Department, Catamarca. Andes [online]. 2015, vol.26, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

The purpose of this paper is to present the site Loma de la Escuela Vieja (Puerta de Corral Quemado, Belen, Catamarca) and to analyze information generated in recent research, from a relational approach of landscape, considered in their spatial, temporal and social dimensions. We present the site plan and we describe both the environment and architectural structure characteristics, and their arrangement in space. We analyze the results of a room’s excavation and the materials recovered, and finally, we compare a radiocarbon date with all chronological data obtained from late sites in Hualfín Valley. With the integration of these dimensions we suggest a reconstruction of the local landscape, considering the excavated room as a productive space, and the whole site as a protected village, occupied by family groups. The excavated room was probably abandoned towards the beginnings of the Inka conquest. Finally, we suggest some different interpretations about the role of the site at local and regional levels, considering the typical intergroup conflicts of Regional Development Period and the influence occurred due the annexation of territory to Tawantinsuyu.

Keywords : Loma de la Escuela Vieja; Relational landscape; Regional Developments Period; Inka conquest; Hualfín Valley.
