Abstract

BRUNNER, Elmira Estela  and  CASTIGLIONE, Ana María. Identities and expectations of entrant students at a language and literature higher level teacher training institution in the city of Santiago del Estero. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2014, n.46, pp.137-153. ISSN 1668-8104.

This article focuses on understanding how higher education students´ new ways of being and behaving influence on their identities and subjectivities development, and analyze how this impacts on their academic interaction and expectations The study is restricted to the analysis of first year students -entrants- in the area of language and literature at IES Nº 8 Teaching Training Institute in the city of Santiago del Estero.             The work deals with the analysis of students answers to interviews and polls- delivered to them within the framework of a research project still in process called "New students´ identities and expectations at higher education: their influence in the educational formation processes" (CICyT-UNSE 2009-1011). This project aims at recognizing the new ways in which students develop their identities in present socio cultural contexts highly mediated by the new technologies of information and communication.             This work carries out a socio demographic characterization of students at this teaching training institution with the data obtained from the interviews, digging into their interests and expectations with the purpose of achieving a more comprehensive and wide insight into the world of young students.             The study is grounded on an approach to studying and conceptualizing identity in the tenets of the analytic lens of intersectionality, that is as a dynamic and everlasting relational process of understanding and researching identity and student identity development.             Explicit attention is given to getting an insight into youth identity marks, reflecting on their way of communicating and interacting with others, and of accessing socio cultural issues, in the hope of being able to draw inferences about their academic expectations.             The analysis of this issue is expected to contribute to overcome those naturalized stereotyped views on young people which mostly interfere with the process of knowing about youth subjectivities in order to foster and generate a deep reflection aimed at assuming full responsibility and an active role on the part of the educational community
