Abstract

PALERMO, Alicia Itatí. El acceso de las mujeres a la educación universitaria. Rev. argent. sociol. [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.7, pp.11-46. ISSN 1669-3248.

This paper analyzes women's access to university education in the nineteenth century, focusing on contemporary debates in different countries regarding women's "capacity" for education, particularly for university studies. Embarking on a university career forced women to develop different strategies. Career choice, traveling to enroll in the university or practice their profession, and resorting to legal actions, were some of the strategies that allowed women to take advantage of the niches that the gender system left available, rather than openly confronting it. These strategies were successful to the extent that they enabled women to study, practice their profession, and become participants in the social world of the nineteenth century.
