Abstract

ESPECHE, Carmen del Valle  and  GUAYMAS, Claudia. Homeland and heroes in the north-west Argentine folklore. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2005, n.4, pp.241-254. ISSN 1669-9041.

Within the project Independence and emergence of Nations: Foundation, Celebration and Elegy of Poetical Discourse, in the present work we analyse traditional historical poetry and intend to survey the heroes’ figures of Independence. Considering Augusto Raúl Cortazar’s  proposal and his studies in folklore -specifically in literary folklore-  as well as the contributions of discourse analysis and literary comparatism, we study a corpus of poetical compositions referred to historical events of north-west Argentina between 1800 and 1830. The selection of the material was made from the book of lyrical poems collected  by Alfonso Carrizo and Olga Fernández Latour. Having as starting point the ideas of “homeland” and “freedom”, we analyse the chronological evolution and discourse configuration of these notions, as well as the production historical context and the representation of the socio-political actors involved (patriots/enemies/ heroes). Among these, Martín Miguel de Güemes is not present. This fact attracts our attention since he is an important figure of Salta’s historiography. In this respect we offer some hypotheses that, anyway, do not conclude a reasearch that may be continued.

Keywords : Mother country; Freedom; Literary folklore; Hero; Poetic compositions.
