Abstract

GARCIA SALES, Breno Augusto  and  DE AMORIM E SA, Samuel Maria. Pinhole photos and the perception of environment: Etnography with schoolchildren near the protected area of Utinga State Park (Pará, Brazil). Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2018, n.47, pp.123-141. ISSN 1850-275X.

This article addresses elementary-school students’ perceptions of their school and housing environments near a protected area in the city of Belem, state of Pará, Brazil. Work with students was conducted in two moments: during a social maps-creation workshop and a pinhole photography workshop. Throughout the latter, data for research questions was collected as students built cameras and created their photo essays. The students’ pictures revealed the human and non-human dimensions of places, showing, above all, the ambivalence of those dimensions portrayed in the children’s backyards, pets, certificates and their everyday bikes. In addition to these products, the construction and use of the pinhole camera also involved an exercise of estrangement and visual education of these young students.
