Abstract
BARBERENA, Ramiro. Biogeografía, competencia y demarcación simbólica del espacio: modelo arqueológico para el norte de Neuquén. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.367-381. ISSN 1850-373X.
Biogeography consists of the analysis of the behavior and distribution of organisms in the context of the landscape they inhabit. Here a biogeography-based archaeological model for northern Patagonia is presented, taking into consideration information on current topography, climate, and ecology. The model is focused on hunter-gatherer societies, although it is also useful for societies with low-level food production. The northwestern Patagonian landscape is stratified into geographically circumscribed areas with high herbivore carrying capacity and spatially unrestricted areas with low carrying capacity. Expectations in terms of occupational intensity, technological organization (place vs. individual oriented provisioning strategies), prevalence of competition processes, and symbolic demarcation of space (by means of rock-art and mortuary practices) are presented. The paper concludes with a preliminary discussion of the model for northern Neuquén Province.
