Abstract

MASTRANGELO, Andrea. From defeated enemy to fenced treasure: an ethno historical study on environment in Misiones Alto Paraná forest production (Arg.). Avá [online]. 2012, n.20, pp.00-00. ISSN 1851-1694.

In this article, an environmental ethno history of forest production in the  Altoparanaense Atlantic woods of Misiones (Argentina) among 1874 and 2010 is presented. To accomplish this, the environmental history approach is used, in which the practices and ideas of a society related to their nature intervention are pursued (Arnold, 1992). It is ethno history because it is oriented to diversity characterization of illiterate and subordinate social groups. Due to technological, resources and used territory differences, the studied period is subdivided into three stages: a) 1874 - 1920: Hegemonic representation of the jungle as the enemy to defeat in order to integrate Misiones to the nation. b)  1930 - 1960: The jungle as a zero cost raw material source. c) 1970 - 2010: The jungle is protected in reservation areas. The monoculture plantation is defined as forest. The central hypothesis is that the historical and ethnographic approach allows understanding the nature-culture relationship as a simultaneous configuration process among excluding domains, in which the type and ethnic diversity determine particular social environmental experiences.

Keywords : Forestation; Monoculture; Political Ecology; Environmental Ethnohistory.
