Abstract

STAMPFLI, Guillermo. Historical facts and dramatic texts: Santa Fe Province and its Rural Drama 1904-1920. Mem. am. [online]. 2007, n.15, pp.185-222. ISSN 1851-3751.

The current paper proposes a dialogue between historical processes of social change recorded by the historiography of Santa Fe province and three theater plays describing the situation of the area during 1904 and 1920. The plays in itself are: La gringa written by Florencio Sánchez; La flor de trigo by José de Maturana and Madre tierra by Alejandro Berruti. Following some hypothesis already developed by Roberto Giusti (1933) and Alicia Aisemberg and María de los Ángeles Sanz (1999) we will focus on the social and political meaning those texts reveal. We will analyze how the underlying notion of pueblo was constructed in the dramatic creations of Maturana and Berruti, closely associated with anarchist ideas, since both authors were able to overcome the stereotype immigrant-natives created by Sanchez.

Keywords : Dramas; Rural conflicts; Migration; "Pueblo".
