World patent banks have served as indicators of the advances of technologies since the past centuries, allowing to identify the latest innovations that have occurred and the evolution of the improvements that have come to the market, being that one of the consequences of the current technological evolution portrayed by them is reflected in the high number of people living with mobility problems. The present article analyzes the evolution of the index of innovation in assistive technology in Brazil, based on the analysis of the number of deposits of patents for wheelchairs, walking sticks, crutches and walkers researched in the patent bank of the National Institute of Industrial Property - INPI, since 1976, identifying a total of 240 deposits of these devices. An analysis of the temporal variation of these deposits, the reasons for sudden growth in certain periods, as well as the main novelties presented are reported and discussed.
