Abstract

GENTINETTA, Martín Alejandro. Un marino ilustrado de la Monarquía borbónica: Basilio Villarino y sus expediciones por las costas patagónicas a fines del setecientos. Prohistoria [online]. 2013, vol.19, pp.43-70. ISSN 1851-9504.

This paper provides an insight into the life of Basilio Villarino, a Borbonic marine who lived at the end of Eighteenth century. This work focuses on Villarino's studies at the Navy, his knowledge in «useful sciences»; i.e. natural science, his intervention during different expeditions to the Patagonic seaside between 1779 and 1785, and the information he wrote in his travel journals. Villarino's contributions to Borbonic expedition policies in the second half of the Eighteenth century are analysed by examining these topics. Likewise, the objectives and basis of Spanish expeditions can be understood by the analysis of Villarino's activities

Keywords : Enlightenment marines; Spanish Empire; Patagonic seaside; Eighteenth century; Borbonic reforms.
