Abstract

GALARZA, Antonio  and  BANZATO, Guillermo. Exercising Power in a Frontier Town: Juan Lorenzo Castro: Landed, Storekeeper and Mayor of Chascomus (Buenos Aires) in the Early Nineteenth Century. Prohistoria [online]. 2014, vol.21, pp.105-129. ISSN 1851-9504.

The article studies the exercise of authority in the south of Buenos Aires frontier, from the perspective of customary practices that regulated livestock production in the Buenos Aires rural world of the early nineteenth century. From the reconstruction of economic activities and behavior as an officer of Juan Lorenzo Castro we proceed to characterize the influence of customs in the actions of local authorities at time to resolving conflicts originated in livestock production. The study of disputes and their resolution at the local scale, acts as a means to advance the characterization of links that enabled the deployment of institutional entities of power in the campaign
