The article states that writing practices in daily school life materialize the educational background of the subjects involved. To do this, it examines practices in the classroom in a state-run primary school in the Province of Buenos Aires during 2011. The analysis of the classes observed provides a description of the relational network in which writing practices take place. This network allows us to view the process of construction of knowledge between non-school knowledge and school knowledge in relation to the uses of written language. The classes we observed also allow us to explore the way in which writing practices articulate differential assessments of the uses of written language in the context of socio-historical processes that go beyond educational institutions.
