The historiographical project of Martín García Mérou: his readings of Alberdi, Echeverría and Sarmiento

This article investigates the project for a history of Argentine thought, centered on the great figures of the romantic generation, which Martín García Mérou conceived and partly carried out at the end of the 19th century. The basic corpus, therefore, consists of Juan Bautista Alberdi (Ensayo crítico) (1890), Ensayo sobre Echeverría (1894) and the three chapters he managed to publish of the volume that was to be devoted to Sarmiento (1890-1896). However, extensive archival work has made it possible to incorporate other sources, such as unsigned articles in which García Mérou defended Alberdi and accused Sarmiento of being a traitor to the fatherland (Sud-América, 1886), as well as manuscripts and personal letters that allow us to reconstruct and better understand that historiographical project. The analysis of these materials is situated within the framework of the emerging literary criticism at the end of the century, and it is argued that the scope and limits of this intellectual history respond to the process of the emergence of the discourse of criticism. It also examines the general objectives pursued by García Mérou and the specific operations through which he outlines the distinctive profiles with which he seeks to ensure that each of the authors addressed has his own place in the history of national thought and literature.
