Abstract

TAMOUS1, Silvina. MEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN E INSEGURIDAD EN DEMOCRACIA. Estud. - Cent. Estud. Av., Univ. Nac. Córdoba [online]. 2014, n.32, pp.285-296. ISSN 1852-1568.

This article attempts to analyse the role of media when communicating about issues related with security and crime in times of democracy. That's is why it refers to the owners of media through time as well as the technological advances and the role of the police or crime section in newsrooms, tv channels or radios. In this case, it shows how a single peace of news grows for three separates reasons. One, the news helps criticise the government. Two, it helps not deal with the profound social and political causes of the news. And three, it helps to fill the space in police or crime daily news. The media has built throughout the last ten years a criminal stereotype: young poor man who lives in humble neighbourhood. From this way of viewing life, they are the origin of all that's bad with society. Even though homicide statistics are far from being alarming, media tends to create panic overexposing victim of crime. Member of the Supreme Court of Justice of Argentina, Eugenio Zaffaroni refers to this as "media criminology", a infallible social construction that can't be refuted and that it dictates even changes in law.

Keywords : media; security; criminology; crime.
