Abstract

VERA, Mignaqui,  and  MIGUEL, Lacabana,. ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT: THE EXTRACTION OF LITHIUM IN BRINE IN THE PUNA ARGENTINA. SaberEs [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.2, pp.148-168.  Epub Jan 05, 2024. ISSN 1852-4418.

Global North energy transition requires lithium, which is available in the brines of the Argentine Puna. Its extraction and purification requires the use of fresh water, a scarcely available resource in the water basins of the puna and a determining factor of ecosystem functioning. Various sectors express their concern about the possible impact on the territory of this extraction. This work puts in values and in scale the possible impacts that the consumption of water for the population as for the extraction of lithium could have in the water basins of the puna. Results show that water resource impact is relevant in most of the basins where extraction increases were announced.
