The present article assesses the use of three defenses-denial, projection, and identification-as revealed in stories told to TAT cards. The scoring for each defense is based on seven categories, each designed to reflect a different aspect of the defense. The article supports the idea that the levels of mental pathology are manifested by the use of one defense or another, as well as by a more or less mature form of the defense.
