Abstract

SOSA, Heber et al. Ecological restoration of Monte wetlands. Participatory techniques at the RAMSAR site “Lagunas de Guanacache, Desaguadero y del Bebedero” (provinces of Mendoza and San Luis, Argentina). Multequina [online]. 2021, vol.30, n.2, pp.285-301. ISSN 1852-7329.

Results of participatory ecological restoration actions are presented in old wetlands of the RAMSAR Site ‘Lagunas de Gauancache, Desaguadero y del Bebedero’ in a sector bordering Mendoza and San Luis provinces (Argentina). Since 2011, interventions have been underway to stop back-hoe erosion in gullies entering the wetland system in the headwaters of the Desaguadero River. Twenty-two embankments and boards were built with geotextile-coated site material to prevent their degradation. In nine years of operation, rainwater and sediment have been accumulated to contribute to the restoration of about 1000 ha of wetlands. These results have improved biodiversity related to the intervention sector and contributed to the recovery of a key ecosystem service, such as the availability of fresh water for livestock and pasture irrigation. This benefits some 300 Huarpe cattle-raising families.
