Abstract
ROSON, M. Isabel and AADYND. Grupo de Estudio de Diabetes et al. Consumption of artificially sweetened beverages (BEA) with non-nutritive sweeteners and its relationship to the development of Metabolic Syndrome and type 2 Diabetes.. Diaeta [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.159, pp.37-44. ISSN 1852-7337.
Introduction. In Argentina 37.1% of the population is overweight, about 20.8% is obese and there is a prevalence of 9.8% of diabetes. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome varies between 20 and 25%. According to the study HIDRATAR, the average consumption of water, beverages and tea was 2050 ml/day, of which 29% corresponded to artificially sweetened beverages (ASB). There is no international consensus for their consumption. Methods: A literature search of articles published since 2005 in PubMed; Scielo and Cochrane was conducted, in order to know the relationship between consumption of ASB and the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results: 12 papers indicating ASB´s adverse effects were found; which represent a bigger population under study, and followed for much longer. It is a controversial issue, with great disparity in terms of obtaining information, taking into account that, in the case of studies with humans, the components of the food plan that must be considered are many. Conclusions: It has been shown that non-nutritive sweeteners are not metabolically inert substances and there is evidence suggesting that ASB are not completely innocuous, and educating people becomes essential and necessary to limit their consumption and to promote water intake
