Abstract

LARIGUET, Guillermo. Truth, Democracy and Tolerance. Rev. latinoam. filos. [online]. 2015, vol.41, n.2, pp.223-237. ISSN 1852-7353.

From Hobbes's famous statement "auctoritas non veritas facit legem", in this article I discuss the problem that exists around the relationship between the concept of truth and democracy. I try to explain the nature of problem and try to establish, in addition, the following question: under what kind of conceptual tension this problem is manifested. After defining a notion of truth, I contrast it with the challenges of pluralism and disagreement on substantive issues. I remember the idea of reasonableness in Rawl's Political Liberalism. Then I intent to reformulate the question of truth in terms of an objective discussion, understanding it from the requirement of a rational or based on good reasons or argumentative discussion. Also I argue that tolerance is a concept that presupposes a value of objective type with which attempts to reconcile the fact of disagreement and evaluative pluralism with democratic coexistence.

Keywords : Democracy; Truth; Tolerance; Pluralism; Liberalism.
