Abstract

WAJNERMAN, Abel. The Autonomy of the Ability Condition for the Analytic Project in Epistemology. Rev. latinoam. filos. [online]. 2017, vol.43, n.1, pp.9-27. ISSN 1852-7353.

Pritchard intends to revitalize the analytic project in the theory of knowledge: offering an informative and non-circular characterization of knowledge. He believes that this can be done if we notice that the two main intuitions about knowledge imply independent conditions. I argue that we can characterize knowledge using only the ability condition, without appealing to an independent condition. The main case against the sufficiency of the ability condition is the epistemic twin earth case. I claim that it does not work if we acknowledge that the relevant ability is not merely a perceptual faculty but a more complex detection mechanism.

Keywords : Analysis of knowledge; Virtue epistemology; Ability condition; Epistemic twin earth; Detection mechanisms.
