Abstract

VAN ZELE, María Andrea. Geomagnetic quiet variations (SQ) and its relation with the vortex of the equivalent ionospheric currents. Geoacta [online]. 2014, vol.39, n.2, pp.99-113. ISSN 1852-7744.

Even during days with similar geomagnetic and solar activity, or season, it is found that the geomagnetic variations recorded during quiet days (Sq) can differ in its shape at the same observatory. Though the intensity is smaller than in those days with perturbations, its determination is important because it is supposed that Sq is underlying the records from where it must be removed. These variations are generated by diurnal ionospheric currents which form two caps from the equator to high latitudes, whose vortex (focus) are at the south and north hemispheres at mid latitudes. With a simple model this work sketches causes for the differences in the records, considering the position between observatories and vortex and the movements of them, but not the intensity or dimensions of the caps; it also suggests a way to estimate the position of the vortex.

Keywords : Sq quiet geomagnetic variations; Ionospheric currents vortex position.
