Abstract

The aim of this work is to perform an updating, analysis and divulgation of ethnobotanical data linked to ferns, reported by indigenous and criollos groups of Argentina. For this purpose, ethnobotanical data from 66 bibliographical sources of ethnobotanical, botanical, pharmacobotanical, anthropological, folkloric and of historical nature, were compiled. A total of 502 ethnobotanical data, registered in 1065 bibliographical quotations, referring to 106 fern taxa employed by indigenous and criollos groups of Argentina, were compiled. Medicinal uses were clearly outstanding representing 84 % of total data (424), while the other use categories not surpassed 3 % each. Among them, magical (18); comercial (16), ornamental (16), fodder (7), alimentary, toxic and indicator uses (4 data each), among others, can be mentioned. For medical purposes, ferns are mainly employed against ailments of the reproductive (31,1 %); digestive (14,1 %); respiratory (11,8 %), and urinary system (9,4 %). Criollos and indigenous groups showed similar values of total data, but the latter employ a larger quantity of species because their localization in the most diversity areas of ferns in Argentina.
