Abstract

DUKUEN, Juan. Un arte de inventar: el habitus en la lectura bourdiana de Panofsky. Cuad. Cent. Estud. Diseñ. Comun., Ensayos [online]. 2020, n.88, pp.17-34. ISSN 1853-3523.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18682/cdc.vi88.3793.

In this paper we analyze the effect that Bourdieu’s reading of Panofsky’s work had on the genesis of his notion of habitus. We begin by reviewing the first definition of habitus in Bourdieu’s introduction to A middle-brow Art (1965). Then we address his postface to Panofsky’s Gothic architecture and scholasticism (1967) and contemporary texts in which habitus is understood as an “art of inventing”, allowing to establish an alternative way to the “deterministic” readings of the concept. We conclude by showing the value of a non-dogmatic use of the notion of habitus for empirical research.

Keywords : Habitus; Bourdieu; Panofsky; art of inventing; sociology of culture..
