Abstract

Social sciences have contributed to highlight tensions and paradoxes of urban regeneration processes in Latin America's historical centers. In these places, undercertain discourses that allude to heritage, urban aesthetics, public space, nature, culture and citizenship, an increasing number of people who are being excluded from the urban project. Based on the case of the historic center of Quito (CHQ) - declared in 1978 as the First Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO- and our collaborative ethnographic work in Quito s old neigh-borhoods, we argue that representation has played a central role both in the formation of a hegemonic perspective on the city and its past, as well as in the tactics and strategies that neighbors use to confront dominant narratives and dispute their right to the city.
