Abstract

ADUR NOBILE, Lucas Martín. Sympathies and Differences: Borges and the Catholic intelligentsia in the late twentiesSympathies and Differences: Borges and the Catholic intelligentsia in the late twenties. Soc. relig. [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.38. ISSN 1853-7081.

This paper discusses the complex relationship between Jorge Luis Borges and the intellectual peers who belong to the so called "Argentinean Integral Catholicism." Considering Borges'artistic position in the last years of 1920s (between 1927 and 1929) and his closeness to Catholic intellectuals and artists, we attempt to analyze how the Christian discourse operates or is redefined in Borges'work. Thus, we will explore in his writings the presence of concepts and authors from the Christian tradition, his ties to the poets from the Convivio, and his contributions to the Catholic journal Criterio. Even though all these references might have made his Catholic peers believe in Borges as a potential ally to their ideological cause, later in 1930s, Borges became the most fervent enemy of this group. Therefore, not only will this research illustrate the dynamics of this little known literary field, but it will present how Borges embraces a Catholic tradition while building his own heterodox poetic.
