FRERE, María Magdalena et al. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN APPLIED TO CERAMIC COVERINGS OF HUNTER-GATHERER-FISHERS OF THE PAMPAS. Folia [online]. 2023, n.47, pp.245-262. ISSN 0325-8238. http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0476799.
In order to contribute to the knowledge of ceramic technology of hunter-gatherer-fisher groups of the Salado River of Buenos Aires, we have carried out an experimental archaeology project for thirty years. In this article, we present the experimental results related to the preparation and use of coloring materials. We applied the prepared substances in small bowls replicas that were subjected to heating. In these experiments, we used red and white mineral pigments from the Tandilia System, an area that was part of the circuit traveled by these bands during the late Holocene, to supply and transport of rocks. Some of the results obtained from the experimentation allow us to state that these groups had technical knowledge about the coloring substances, how to obtain them, the manufacturing practices, and the application on certain supports. The experimental work shows that the hardness of the different pigments implied diverse efforts for grinding; which was the best moment to fix the colorant; the differences in the application techniques; and the behavior of the colors after firing.
