Cleft lip and palate are the most frequent craniofacial malformations in the in human species. The rehabilitation process for individuals with cleft lip and palate is often long and requires several surgical procedures. Almost always, these surgeries are are performed with the use of antibiotic prophylaxis. However, there is no consensus on this issue, as well as on the various implications that exist. Thus, tthis narrative review article was carried out taking into account the high cost, the peculiarities and the technological novelty of the use of type 2 human recombinant bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP- 2) in secondary alveolar graft surgeries for the treatment of individuals with cleft lip and palate. Therefore the present article discusses the use of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis in the face of the oral environment conditions, the postoperative period and prognosis for these individuals.
