Resumen

GUELMAN, Martín. Drug abuse rehabilitation as conversion: An analysis of the treatment programs of two religious therapeutic communities that belong to international networks. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2018, n.54, pp.163-189. ISSN 1668-8104.

The role played by religious and spiritual dimensions as agents in the recovery of substance dependence has been understudied. However, the approaches that incorporate these dimensions have a long history in the field of addictions. This paper analyses the treatment programs of two religious therapeutic communities that belong to international networks and have headquarters in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (Argentina), and their links with the characteristics of the conversion process they promote among the residents. The research was qualitative and consisted of a multiple case study. For the construction of the empirical evidence, interviews were conducted with managers, mentors, residents and former residents of both institutions. In a complementary way, participant observations were carried out in different activities that they organize. In both institutions, the therapeutic program and the rehabilitation are inseparable from the main dimension of the transformations they seek to introduce: the religious conversion of the residents.
