PESCIO, Francisco. Balance entre la producción de una huerta agroecológica y la demanda nutricional de una familia tipo en el Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2020, vol.46, n.1, pp.116-122. ISSN 1669-2314.
Among the main social questions at global level, is access to healthy foods. In Argentina, the food problem is manifested mainly as under-consumption of vitamins and minerals and a high rate of obesity, especially in popular sectors. Among the alternatives, Urban Agriculture has been proposed, specifically backyard family gardens with an agroecological base. This work sought to investigate, based on a specific case, about the effective nutritional contribution of a backyard orchard with agroecological management, especially in vitamins and Minerals, the degree of self-sufficiency achieved to satisfy the food demands of a typical family and the cultivated surface area that would be necessary to fulfill that requirements. We worked with the production of an orchard of 152 m2 located in La Matanza (Buenos Aires) and sustained by family work. Data were collected for one year and the annual contribution in different minerals and vitamins was estimated for each crop. The annual productivity obtained was 7.42 kg / m2. The supply of vitamins A, B9, K and C would be surplus for a typical family. The contribution of Phosphorus and Iron was close to self-sufficiency. There were important deficits in vitamins E and Potassium, while the lowest contribution was Sodium, with 18% of the daily demands. The minimum surfaces necessary to fulfill family requirements was highly variable, from 16,9 m2 for Vitamin K to 870,8 m2 for Sodium requirements. It was determined that backyard gardens can be an interesting source of provision in urban contexts, especially for certain vitamins and minerals. It would be convenient to extend this type of work to cross-sectional studies with statistical representation at a regional level.
