MORENO, Enrique. Propitiating the encounter: The structuration of hunting landscapes in the andean context. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.327-347. ISSN 1850-373X.
Hunting is a relevant social practice for social reproduction. This activity, based on the appropriation of wild animals, articulates a variety of elements, one of which is the landscape. Encounters between hunters and their prey take place in a significant space, where relations are lived and experienced daily. Dwelling in the landscape where the encounters take place generates traces that can be identified and recorded through archaeological methodologies, enabling the generation of interpretations about historical hunting practices. As such, results obtained from intensive surveys in the Quebrada de Antofalla, Departamento Antofagasta de la Sierra, Provincia de Catamarca are presented. The surveys aimed to assess both the characteristics of the landscape of the area (water sources, slopes, elevations above sea level, vegetation, etc.) and changes made by human populations. In this way, structures such as trenches, shelters or hides, together with environmental features, generate a landscape which anticipates the encounter between hunter and prey through the knowledge and relations established among the various elements of the practice.
