Resumen

BENTIVENGA, Emiliano  y  LYNCH, Julieta. Tecnología lítica entre las sociedades tardías al norte del valle de Hualfín (Catamarca): el caso del sitio Villavil 2. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.1, pp.59-76. ISSN 1850-373X.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.37176/iea.24.1.2023.792.

This paper presents a tecno-morphological study of knapped lithic artifacts from the Villlavil 2 site, Hualfín valley, Catamarca, whose occupation dates back to the Late and Inka periods (c. 900 – 1532 A.C.). Analysis shows the use of local raw materials and allochthonous obsidian. The high proportion of non-manufactured artifacts indicates the predominance of technological expediency. Nonetheless, we recorded a differential use of rocks. Those from local origin were used for the simple knapping of large, formatized artifacts (rabots and shovels and/or hoes), while obsidian was used for the manufacture of small projectile points that show greater production effort through bifacial reduction. Likewise, we found evidence that the main part of the reduction sequence was carried out at the site, with the use of dissimilar knapping techniques. The special role of obsidian may be due to its excellent quality for knapping and the symbolic meaning that pre-Hispanic Andean societies may have assigned to this raw material.
