This paper presents the first results of field and laboratory research carried out in western San Luis, in the region known as La Travesía. This region presents biogeographic conditions typical of semi-arid to arid environments, and lacks surface water suitable for the physiological requirements of human groups. With respect to archaeological studies, there are no recent works in the area outside of this project. For this reason, in this paper, in the first instance, a review of the archaeological bibliography of the last century is presented. Secondly, the research carried out is detailed, including an initial characterization of the recognized sites based on their location in the local geomorphological units and the raw materials identified. From the synthesis of previous research and the new information generated, spatial and, to a lesser extent, chronological trends of the indigenous occupations are discussed. The results indicate that landscape features capable of containing water and rock outcrops suitable for knapping are, so far, the points in space that concentrate the evidence of human occupation. This is consistent with what is expected for spaces with a notorious water deficit, where water and rocks were critical resources for decision making.
