Resumen

ANGELIS, Hernán H. De; GUILLOT, Mauricio González  y  ZUCK, Federico. SITIOS ARQUEOLÓGICOS DE ALTURA EN TIERRA DEL FUEGO, ARGENTINA. ENTRE PASOS CORDILLERANOS Y ZONAS DE ABASTECIMIENTO LÍTICO. Comechingonia [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.3, pp.14-14. ISSN 1851-0027.

The exploitation of lithic raw materials by past societies in Tierra del Fuego, in general, took place mainly in secondary sources, represented by coastal pebbles that show good knapping quality (sensu Aragón and Franco 1997). During the exploration of hard rock raw materials outcrops in the cordilleran región, we have detected specific zones with rocky outcrops of Tierra del Fuego meta-rhyolite lacking foliation, along with knapping artifact, all with very good knapping quality. The aim ofthis work is to study the management of lithic raw materials in the mountain sector corresponding to three high altitude sites (above 600 m as.l.). These sites are located in a glacial valley, and show evidence of primary provisioning that allows us to infer extractive activity for the supply and subsequent transfer of the material to other sites, thus constituting the first links in the operational chain. Access to and exploitation of these primary sources, given their location at high altitude, must have been only seasonal, in summer-spring, when the valley was devoid of snow. The primary sources in Tierra del Fuego may therefore not be as scarce as previously thought. We therefore believe that further studies and surveys are needed in order to broaden our knowledge of the modes of circulation and exploitation of lithic resources in this region.
