Resumen

CUENYA, María I. et al. Yield performance and disease resistance levels of TUC 97-8, a new sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) variety in Tucumán, Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2013, vol.90, n.1, pp.01-08. ISSN 1851-3018.

The wide extension planted with LCP 85-384 variety in the sugarcane growing area in the province of Tucumán has put the sustainability of the agroecosystem at risk. As a matter of fact, this could be seen when this cultivar became susceptible to brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala) and thus inoculum pressure progressively increased at a provincial level. Between 2009 and 2011, the Programa de Mejoramiento Genético de Caña de Azúcar (PMGCA) of Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres released four commercial cultivars to diversify varietal alternatives. This paper analyzes production behavior and disease resistance levels of one of these new varieties, TUC 97-8, in regional trials of the PMGCA, distributed in the sugarcane growing area in Tucumán. TUC 97-8 and the control, LCP 85-384, together with other 18 genotypes, were planted in regional trials in five locations, according to a completely randomized block design with three replicates. We assessed cane tons and sugar tons per hectare in May and July (TCH, TAHM and TAHJ, respectively) at four crop ages (plant and first to third ratoons). Analysis of variance and comparison of means tests were performed to analyze each variable, age and location. In addition, disease resistance levels were evaluated. TUC 97-8 presented very good performance levels in cane/ha and sugar/ha (in May and July, respectively) in most regional trials. At plant cane age, TUC 97-8 surpassed LCP 85-384 in TCH, TAHM and TAHJ with significant differences, in four of the five regional trials. At plant and first to third ratoon ages, TUC 97-8 showed a yield performance similar to that of LCP 85-384. The new cultivar behaved as moderately resistant to brown rust and red stripe (Acidovorax avenae) and resistant to mosaic (Sugar cane mosaic virus) and smut (Sporisorium scitamineum).
