Resumen

COSTILLA, Diego D. et al. Botanical description of TUCCP 77-42, RA 87-3 and LCP 85-384 sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) varieties and their inscription in the Registro Nacional de Cultivares de la República Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2013, vol.90, n.1, pp.51-55. ISSN 1851-3018.

Until 2009, no sugar cane variety had been included in the Catálogo Nacional de Cultivares in Argentina. The inclusion in the catalog implies the inscription of varieties in the Registro Nacional de Cultivares, regulated by Instituto Nacional de Semillas (INASE). For this inscription to be approved, the new variety has to be previously assessed with regard to its distinctness, uniformity and stability (DHE), following the guidelines set by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). This work aims to evaluate DHE of commercial varieties TUCCP 77-42, RA 87-3 and LCP 85-384. Samples of stalks and leaves of 10 to 12-month-old plant cane material were examined for DHE, taking into account 54 qualitative and quantitative traits. This allowed determining the distinctive botanical characters of the varieties mentioned above. Six samples were partially or totally evaluated to define qualitative characters, whereas other 24 samples from different stools were analyzed wholly or partially to determine quantitative characters. The evaluation of each character was repeated four times. This detailed botanical description allowed meeting INASE requirements for the subsequent inclusion of TUCCP 77-42, RA 87-3 and LCP 85-384 in the Catálogo Nacional de Cultivares. These varieties became the first sugarcane cultivars to be listed in the Registro Nacional de Cultivares of Argentina.
