MONKEVICIUS, Paola Carolina. Who can speak about Afro-Argentinean past?: contesting hegemonic memories from Afrodescendant leadership. Runa [online]. 2020, vol.41, n.1, pp.115-127. ISSN 1851-9628. http://dx.doi.org/10.34096/runa.v41i1.5828.
The visibilizing of Afro-argentinean population produced in the last years has demanded identity and mnemonic reconstructions. In this paper we focus our attention on the social production of memories and forgettings as a key element in the delimitation and identification of the Afro-Argentinean collective and, therefore, as the central arena of disputes and political struggle. In particular, we are going to reflect on the actions of Afro-descendant and African leaders in the construction of authorized and legitimized versions of the past to circulate and be transmitted inside and outside the collective, focusing on the disputes and agreements regarding other narratives with which they compete for the truth character, fundamentally the hegemonic national narrative and the anthropological academic construction. These processes opened debates on the forgotten past of Afro-Argentinean people and on the legitimacy of their spokemen.
