PAWLING, Perla Chinchilla. Textual Identity and Materiality in the Work of Roger Chartier. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.214-222. Epub 05-Nov-2022. ISSN 1852-0499. http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1311.
This article proposes to recover the historical conditions of the category of materiality of texts as proposed by Roger Chartier since the 1980s, a recovery that became an innovation for the history of the book. After incorporating, not without difficulty, this category into the core of historiography, Chartier sought to demonstrate that works are not immutable substances, but that the incidence of their printed presence is fundamental to rethink their identity as cultural goods. Nevertheless, materiality always functioned in his work as a practical provision for the historical treatment of print or as a self-evident category that does not require further explication. In fact, writing usually only appears in his work as an entity inscribed on a support. Is it possible to reformulate Chartier’s idea of materiality and radicalize it even further? The article concludes with a working proposal that would make it possible to redefine the type of identity assigned to texts by incorporating materiality as a whole inherent to the works themselves.
