DENEGRI, Gerardo; AGUERRE, Martín  y  ACCIARESI, Gustavo. The expansion of forest plantations and its impact on reducing the area of native forests in three regions of the Argentine Republic. SaberEs [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.2, pp.137-158. ISSN 1852-4418.

Abstract. The Forest Sector has significant economic importance at the country and regional level. The purpose of this work is to describe and assess if forest plantations have substituted natural forests and to quantify the evolution of the aggregate domestic supply of round wood for the timber industry. In order to achieve this goal primary and secondary sources were consulted. The progression of native wood and forest plantations areas was analyzed at the country-level in general and specifically at Selva Misionera, Parque Chaqueño y Bosques Andino Patagónicos regions and it was contrasted with the expansion of agricultural land in the regions mentioned earlier. Log harvest statistics show that forest plantation production replaced progressively native forest resources as a source of raw material for the sawmill industry. It is concluded that agricultural expansion was and continues to be the main cause of deforestation with the exception in the Selva Misionera region between 1950 and 1980 where natural forests were partially replaced by forest plantations.
