Resumen

SIMONETTI, Luis et al. Metacarpal shaft fractures: Treatment with interfragmentary screws. Rev. Asoc. Argent. Ortop. Traumatol. [online]. 2009, vol.74, n.3, pp.242-248. ISSN 1852-7434.

Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the functional and radiological results of a continuous series of patients with metacarpal fractures treated with interfragmentary screws. Methods: We included patients older than 18, with oblique and spiroid diaphyseal fractures treated with interfragmentary screws, who started rehabilitation 2 weeks after surgery. Metacarpo-phalangeal and inter-phalangeal range of motion, palm-fingertip distance and rotational mal-union were clinically evaluated. Grip strenght was measured with a dynamometer. Functional results were evaluated with the DASH questionnaire. Radiological evaluation included metacarpal length restitution. Results were analyzed with the Student t test. Results: Eleven patients were evaluated after 28 months follow-up of. All fractures healed. Of all clinical parameters evaluated, only metacarpo-phalangeal extension showed a significant decrease. DASH questionnaire averaged 2 points. In one case there was a loss of reduction in the post-op. Conclusions: Interfragmentary screws yield excellent results in the treatment of this type of fractures, with low complication rate.
