The aim of the study was to compare the educational track of two groups of students of an Argentinian preuniversity school: a group that has entered through traditional examination modality, and a group that has entered through the new direct admission system (by possessing the best grade averages among public schools). A follow-up of 56 students was carried out during their secondary education. A survey of the grades was made during their first year of high school and institutional withdrawals were also considered. In-depth interviews with the students and their parents were also conducted at the time of admission and again later on when the students were finishing their studies, almost six years later. The results indicate a difference in the educational track, with a clear advantage for the group that has entered through traditional examination modality (and comes from private schools). The most important variables to generate that break were academic and socioeconomic ones. These findings entail a contribution to the interpellation of the so-called "direct admission system" as the only institutional intervention mechanism to contribute to the access and permanence of the new students who enter these types of schools.
