This article explores the ideas and actions of Raúl B. Díaz, the first inspector of rural schools in Argentina. The essay describes Diaz’s role in the creation of schools as well as observer of the development of the Argentine education in the interior of the country. In this last role, the inspector disputed with state authorities because of the difficulties of the educational project in the countryside. The essay also discusses the particular figure of Díaz himself: a civil servant but a critic of the state as well.
