ADAMOVSKY, Ezequiel. Si Carnival Ensembles of (or with) Afro descendants in Buenos Aires, 1869-1926: General Inventory, Description and an Approach to the Question of Interracial Troupes. Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2022, vol.57, n.1, pp.37-69. Epub 07-Jun-2022. ISSN 2314-1549. http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.44.020.
This paper presents a critical and descriptive inventory of the ensembles of (or featuring) people of African descent that took part in the carnival of Buenos Aires between 1869 and 1926. The inventory corrects wrong attributions of ethnicity and other mistakes of previous listings. On a reliable list thus established, the paper offers a description of their main characteristics and types of performance, to conclude with some hypotheses on the importance of mix-race ensembles, which appear to have been more present than we may expect on the basis of the scattered information available. The description of ensembles includes data on gender, nationality, organizational structure, costumes and accessories, dances and musical instruments (son lyrics, on the contrary, remain to be studied in future papers). It also includes, for the first time, a critical revision of evidence of the “tapadas”, a sort of ritual combats between ensembles. Following the name of each ensemble in the final listings, whenever possible, we include information on size, gender, type of performance and name of members and authorities.
