Introduction. A group of teachers from the Pediatrics´ Department of the Medicine Faculty of Buenos Aires University carried out a descriptive investigation among fifth year students who attended to Pediatric signature, proximate to the end of their medical career. The objective was to know the perceptions of the students about their competence, skills and abilities to make a physical examination and certain procedures, in order to determine the health status of a patient. Population, material and methods. 71 maneuvers and 30 basic clinical procedures which are made with exploratory or therapeutic purposes were defined. We proposed to 80 students who began their course on Pediatrics in the Hospital Teaching Units of the Northern Area of Pediatrics Department on March 2003, to anonymously answer of they felt that they were able to perform these procedures and interpret their findings. Results. Expressed in percentage, the affirmative answers varied between 100% in the exploration of axillary's lymph nodes to 18.75% in the recognition of opistotonus. The result about their skills to perform basic maneuvers varied between 86.25% for the measurement of peripheral pulses and arterial blood pressure to 6.25% for making a therapeutic prescription. Conclusions. The work showed that in the perception of the students subjected to the survery severe deficiencies in their competences, skills and abilities to make a physical examination and to determine the health status of a patient were observed.
