SCHMIDT, Mariana. Territorio, ambiente y patrimonio en la Cuenca Matanza Riachuelo. Avá [online]. 2017, n.30, pp.183-204. ISSN 1851-1694.

In the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin, a series of protected areas have been declared within densely urbanized and historically degraded and contaminated territories. Not only environmental arguments have been presented but also its social, historical and archaeological importance has been proposed as grounds for its defense and justification. Through in-depth interviews and the analysis of reports produced by public bodies and local organizations, legislation and other documentary and historical sources, we propose an approach to the collective demand for and public declaration of these urban nature reserves. We focus on the claim by local groups regarding the ancestrality and ethnicity of these territories, once inhabited by native populations during the Spanish conquest, which are home to a set of values to be preserved along with the nature they hold. As a result, we point out the double challenge of combining environmental conservation and ethnic claims emergence in metropolitan contexts, in search of recovering these subordinated histories and territories.
