Assuming that political equality coexisted with an unequal distribution of the land, the aim of the article is to study private land leases as a way to understand some relationships between two different social classes of the citizen body: the rich landowners and the peasantry. Tenancy is analyzed as a mechanism for: a) managing wealthy citizens' properties; b) making available extra land for peasant families in order to match their needs through different phases of the household life cycle; c) subordinating and developing economic exploitation of poor citizens.
